Hello Linux Geeksters. As you may know, HPLIP is a tool for printing, scanning and faxing via the HP printers. The latest version available is HPLIP 3.15.2, which has been recently released, coming with official support for Debian 7.7, Debian 7.8, OpenSUSE 13.2 and Fedora 21 and brings the below fixes:

  • Doesn’t build against libjpeg-turbo 1.3.90
  • hpcups crashes if DEVICE_URI not set in environment
  • Incorrect call to hpmudext.device_open
  • plugin download fails if python links to python3
  • Incorrect IEEE 1284 Device IDs for many models

Also worth mentioning, it got support for Python 3,  but there are some limitations:

  • Doesn’t support Fax Cover Page in Python 3 environments
  • XSane installation failed message on Debian, type ‘n’ to continue installation when HPLIP tools ask to retry xsane installation
  • Cannot launch hp-toolbox for Python less than version 3.4
  • Dependent package installation fails on Fedora

In this article I will show you how to install HPLIP 3.15.2 on the most popular Linux systems, including Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Pinguy OS, Deepin, Peppermint, LXLE, Linux Lite, Debian, Fedora and OpenSUSE.

Because the driver is available as a pre-compiled binary, all you have to do is to download the hplip 3.14.10 run file, set execution permissions, run the installer and follow the gui instructions:

$ cd /tmp
$ wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/3.15.2/hplip-3.15.2.run
$ sudo chmod +x hplip-3.15.2.run
$ ./hplip-3.15.2.run
